Dignity, equity, diversity, and inclusion
The page is a summary of what I have learned and am willing to uphold the values of dignity, equity, diversity and inclusion in a childcare environment. It answers important questions regarding my principles of supporting these values in my practice.Today, I contemplated a lot over how inclusive practices are integrated within the service. I embraced a bilingual child who was still mastering the English language by employing gestures, visuals and reaffirmation of the home language. I saw how different cultures and songs in addition to books were used by the educators to assert identities. I made sure that I behaved in a way that does not demean the children in terms of their backgrounds and abilities.

Fostering Dignity, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion: A Success Story
It was one of the most successful moments I had during my placement when I helped a group of children accept their diversity and make the environment more welcoming to all children.
The Context
Our group consisted of a child new in the center and the home language was not English. At first, they found it quite difficult to interact with one another and this contributed to their feeling of isolation. I also observed that the other children, though friendly did not completely understand how to invite their new friend in any games because of the language barrier.
The Strategy
As a way of promoting inclusion, I adopted a strategy that focused on not only the embracement of diversity but also promoting the participation of all the children in an equal way. To begin with, I presented an easy language task, according to which the children had to acquire several words which were in the home language of their peers, including greetings or expressions of appreciation, like “hello,” “thank you” and “friend.” This aided the collapse of the communication barrier and provided children with an instant method of communicating. Then, I promoted the reading of inclusive books with children of diverse backgrounds, cultures and abilities included. We have read these books collectively and talked about the significance of being respectful to the differences of the other. I also assisted children in being respectful with their use of language as I subtly corrected some of them as each one felt dignified and valued.
The Result
This put efforts paid as the children started introducing their new friend in the group activities, right to the development of block structures and involving in pretend play. The child began to feel less awkward and they became more confident since they could now get to communicate and interact with their peers in a constructive manner. This experience was not only successful due to the way that the children embraced the need to be diverse but also setting the atmosphere that made each and every one of the children feel that they have the same chance to enjoy the exposure, regardless of their background or language capabilities. It strengthened the importance of designing a fair learning status in which each child had his or her dignity and culture respected.

How we promote these values
Throughout my placement, among the main objectives, I had to create the atmosphere in which the children were able to embrace their individual backgrounds and experiences and learn how to respect and appreciate the differences of others.
This is how I helped this along:
Consciousness and appreciation of cultural diversities During the placement, I endeavored to include materials, stories and activities that were reflective of many cultures, traditions and experiences. As an example, we may mention cultural celebration weeks or special events where we dealt with the traditional music, food, and art of some parts of the world. This enabled children to perceive and value cultural diversity in the entertaining manner (Department of Education, 2022).
Inclusive Books and Materials
I placed representative books and resources in the room that correspond with the diversity of children in the room. I made sure to expose my children to different stories that feature children of different ethnic make ups, capability and format of family. Through a reading of these books, we talked about how the characters experience things and how this can or might apply to our own lives, which helped foster an understanding of empathy.
